Hello, this is Mr. Stern's math and science website. I am currently a student in Seattle University's Master in Teaching program. Shortly, I will be working with Mrs. Hughes in teaching 6th graders in room 23 at Echo Lake Elementary. I am looking forward to it!
The first math unit that I will teach will involve dividing fractions. The first lesson will be about dividing a fraction into a whole number. Soon after, we will move into dividing fractions by whole numbers, and then finally dividing fractions by other fractions. It should be very exciting, and I am sure that the students (and I) will learn a lot. Please make sure your student is doing his or her homework! Below are some terms that we are learning in class. Your student should be able to tell you what they mean.
1. whole number
2. quotient B
3. numerator
4. denominator
5. reciprocal
6. inverse
7. fractional part
8. algorithm
9. mixed fraction
10. divisor
11. dividend
Here are a couple of websites you can try at home for division of fraction games and activities.
funbrain.com - for a soccer shootout. You have to know your division of fractions to score (or keep the other team from scoring) visualfractions.com you can look at fractions displayed as parts of circles or against a number line. Can help make it easier to understand division of fractions.
On this site, I will attempt to keep an up-to-date listing of what lessons we have worked on in my class, as well as provide some additional resource links for students (and parents). Next to each website I have provided a short description of the website, and what functions you can do with it. But don't take my word for it, investigate them yourself!
Math Websites
Khan Academy - An amazing, free, website, that provides numerous lessons in math, science, and even other subjects. The lessons are categorized, and links to videos teaching the subject matter. The site allows students to practice on problems created from the lesson, and gives the student a certificate when they complete a level! National Council of Teachers of Mathematics - Another great, free website that has many math lessons and games for students. Fun! EducationalRap.com - A really fun website, where the creators include a huge amount of math and science terms into raps. Great for those learners who can memorize lyrics easily. Unfortunately, this is a paid access website. Cool Math - A free math site with lots of games. Some are actually pretty entertaining.
Science Websites
Science "Snacks" - A free website that offers a number of (mainly simple) experiments to do in class or at home. They are arranged by subject matter to help the surfer find exactly what they are looking for. Nine Planets - A very fun website that shows our solar system with amazing graphics. Drag the planets in orbit around the Sun to see how long their years are. See how far away from the Sun a planet is at any given time. PBS Kids Science - Another website that offers a number of experiments to do in class or at home. Mostly pretty easy to do, and grouped by subject. American Institute of Aeronautics and Aviation - Great free site with experiments relating to aeronautics and aviation.
